Shine a Light on Deepavali

The alarm rings --

That dreaded day has dawned.

That day when the television is never switched off,

That day when a 'bottomless pit' becomes reality even for a person who is usually very picky about food,

That day when you wear eye-popping colours which grab attention from passers-by on the next street,

That day when you get pulled into awkward conversations with strangers at the temple and midway through unwittingly ask a recent divorcee, “So how’s your husband?”

That day when those annoying brats (er, younger cousins) run past you, hands flailing, so you get fresh Henna stains on your new white Punjabi Suit,

That day when you grit your teeth and wait for the entire entourage (AKA family) to assemble for the Annual Family Photograph (which makes its appearance on Facebook in 3...2...1... thanks Uncle C, yes, yes, I'm Like-ing it now).

Yet,

It’s on the very same day that you sit together as a family and enjoy the most clichéd Bollywood film (and drool shamelessly at Shah Rukh Khan).

The day when you just cannot stop yourself from mumbling "Yummmmmm" while devouring the flavoursome home-cooked feasts prepared by the women in the family,

The day when you painstakingly go through all 24 filters on Instagram to make sure that your #OOTD looks stunning and set a new record number of likes,

The day when you bump into your long-lost primary school friend at the temple and start talking non-stop for an hour, reminiscing childhood crushes and enemies,

The day when you use your cousin’s hand as a canvas and doodle with a henna cone to your heart’s content (and be amazed at how your artistic skills have improved),

The day when you pose in front of a iPhone or DSLR, and feel that burst of love for the people standing next to (and sometimes photobombing) you,

The day when you wish for the next Deepavali to arrive as soon as possible.

The Blue and Gold wishes all our readers a Happy Deepavali :)
